DUI Checkpoints in Shelby County Tonight

(Memphis)  The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with the Memphis Police Department for two DUI checkpoints Thursday night.

The first checkpoint will be on Kirby Whitten Rd. north of Raleigh-LaGrange Rd. from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Officers and deputies will then move to Hacks Cross Rd. south of Winchester Rd. for a second checkpoint from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Officers will check drivers for any signs of alcohol or drug intoxication. They will also check for other safety violations, including people driving without proof of insurance or without proper registration and driver’s licenses.

According to statistics released by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, 16,000 people are killed and another 305,000 are injured in drunk driving related incidents every year in the United States.

The checkpoints are funded by a grant from the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office.
