MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People at one local library said they were relieved the two men who opened fire outside the Raleigh Branch Library on Powers Road were arrested and taken to jail.
“It’s close to my house too, My nieces and nephews, they go to that same library too. It’s nerve wracking,” said Calvin Harrell.
So nerve wracking in fact that Harrell said he didn’t want to let his nieces and nephews come to the library anymore by themselves.
Police said a man and his girlfriend were leaving the library last week when someone driving an Infiniti pulled up to the passenger side and started shooting.
They then blocked them in and shot at the driver’s side too.
“Anybody could have gotten hit,” said Harrell. “The person that work in the library could have gotten hit, you never know.”
Travis Milan and Dequan Smith were charged with attempted first-degree murder and gun charges.
People in this community said this library was one of the few places children and their parents used to feel safe.
They said they knew the situation could have been a lot worse.
