MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Durham School Bus Services announced plans to fire a bus driver accused of leaving the scene after hitting a truck Friday.

The crash happened at the intersection of Almo and Knightway Road.

“It was a pickup truck parked here by the corner,” Cleophus Lucas, who lives near the crash site, said.

Lucus did not see the crash but talked to the person whose truck was hit afterwards, “I know this dude’s door was bent all the way back.”

Police said the man called them complaining about a school bus driving out of control with kids in the area.

The concerned driver tried to say something when the driver stopped, but police said the bus driver cussed him out, hit his car, and left the area.

“Accidents, you know it’s going to happen, but when you have children involved you have to be very, very very careful,” Lucas said.

Drivers with Durham School Services were involved in more than 40 crashes this school year.

One driver was arrested for possessing marijuana, and another bus driver was arrested for traffic violations.

“If they don’t want to do the job right, then don’t apply for the job,” Lucas said.

Durham said it was getting rid of the driver involved in the latest crash.

“If that what it takes to get rid of a bad driver in order to get a good driver, then that’s that it needs to take,” Lucas said.

It is not clear when the school bus company will terminate the driver’s position.
