Durham driver re-screening results due back to districts

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Durham School Services pledged to Shelby County Schools and the municipalities that it would return the results of driver background re-screenings by Monday, November 17.

This comes after more than 40 bus crashes for SCS this school year, and at least seven in the municipalities. Police also arrested a driver for having pot on a school bus.

SCS told WREG that Durham would need to be the one to release any information about possible firings due to the re-screenings.

The municipalities are working to get the results to WREG Tuesday.

Durham has not yet released information about the re-screening results, including any possible firings.

Several relatives of SCS students told WREG that they not only want to know how many drivers are let go, but they also want to know why.

“I think they should, and they should let them know what they’re charged with,” Vera Turner said.

“I think it’s a good idea, because I have a disabled child. He’s on the bus. So, I would want whoever’s driving my child to be a great driver, great record because my child’s safety is in their hands,” parent Monique Johnson said.

This is one of the first steps Durham is taking to improve safety.

Durham has also promised to incorporate third-party background checks earlier in the hiring process, as well as more frequent drug screenings and driving record checks.
