MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Durham School Services bus driver wasn’t driving her normal route Thursday, after she was involved in a school bus crash in Cordova Tuesday.
Durham is investigating the crash at Germantown and Club. It sent a motorcyclist to the hospital. There were Cordova Middle School students on the bus, but no one on board was hurt.
The motorcycle driver went to the hospital in non-critical condition.
A concerned grandparent reached out to WREG and asked us to inquire about the driver’s history with Durham.
A Durham spokesperson said, “While the incident that occurred yesterday is still under investigation, I can confirm that the bus driver was involved in a minor incident earlier this year in which she lightly grazed a bumper while changing lanes. The driver was retrained after this incident.”
WREG asked for the name of the driver and how long she has driven for the district, but Durham wouldn’t say. Durham said it doesn’t release drivers’ names to the media, and it cannot discuss “personnel matters” during investigations.
“One strike should be enough,” Shelby County Schools parent Jorrell Spearman said.
“I know that people are human, but I would hate to see someone who’s had a record drive my kids around,” parent Andrea Simmons said.
WREG asked about the driver’s training after the first accident.
Durham said, “In regards to being retrained, she underwent retraining after the first incident, and upon the completion of the current investigation, we will retrain the bus driver if we deem appropriate.”
Durham’s statement doesn’t outright mention anything about termination.
