SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Flooding from the Mississippi River is nearing some homes in low-lying areas in Memphis, according to the Shelby County Office of Preparedness.
Emergency responders were making on-site inspections Sunday in Memphis and Shelby County neighborhoods that could be affected by rising water.
Officials said the Mississippi River will crest at 41 feet on Friday.
Dale Lane, director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness, said all main roads are open but said people need to be on the lookout to avoid being trapped by high water.
Officials said the river is just a few feet away from Tom Lee Park in downtown Memphis. Water is continuing to approach some homes on Mud Island and an unincorporated area near Frayser on Old Cuba-Benjestown Road and Billion Road.
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said the city has so far been fortunate that high water has not gotten into any homes or businesses.
