MEMPHIS, Tenn. — At a vigil for 19-year-old Darrius Stewart on Tuesday there was anger, sadness and confusion.
Hundreds gathered on Winchester Road full of emotions.
They stood in the place where their loved one was shot and killed by a Memphis Police officer July 18.
Stewart’s family said they felt their relative was targeted because of the color of his skin.
Officer, Connor Schilling, claimed he put Stewart in his squad car, because he was wanted in Iowa and Illinois.
Schilling said warrants for Stewart for not showing up for court and for a sex related charge came up when his ID was run.
He said Stewart attacked him when he tried to put him in handcuffs and then used the handcuffs to beat the officer.
Cellphone video showed a scuffle before the officer fired his gun.
Family members said that wasn’t the person they knew.
They described him as gentle, nice and smart,
He wanted to be a doctor.
The group marched up and down the street, letting their voices be heard.
Police showed up at one point, just to ask the crowd to stay on the sidewalk.
The vigil ended in prayer with the group hoping for answers soon.
