(Sardis, MS) – Once every couple of weeks, sharp explosions rattle the walls of Bessie Bobo’s Sardis home.
“I came around I seen this thing laying on the ground and there was this big hole then my shingles are off,” she said.
But this week, a huge piece of an old oxygen tank came flying over the fence from the Martin Brothers scrap yard and hit her newly remodeled house..
“I just had a room built. When it blew up it knocked off part of my house,” she said.
While Ms. Bobo’s concerned about projectiles hitting her home what worries her most is one hitting a child.
“I have a lot of children come to my house and I’m concerned children coming here what if they get killed,” she said. “I’m really scared to be outside.”
And Bobo’s not alone. One neighbor told us his windows were blown out by a different explosion. Another neighbor moved out when the scrap yard moved in about 3 years ago.
They all share the same sentiment. They’re tired of the flying car parts and noisy scrap yard in their once peaceful country town. “They’re bad neighbors,” Bobo said.
Bobo said the company did however offer to pay to fix her home, but they told her estimate was too high.
“He told me to take him to court he’d been there before,” she said.
She hopes won’t come to that.
This is not the only complaint against the company. We are told that at the last board of supervisors meeting several neighbors spoke out about all the 18-wheelers going through the small neighborhood.
We tried to contact the owners of the Martin Brothers scrap metal yard but we were unable to get a comment.
