COLDWATER, Miss. — A young man is dead and another person is fighting for their life at a Memphis hospital after a shooting in Mississippi.

Rodney Wilkins was shot and killed around midnight inside a home in the 700 block of Parkway Street.

Family and friends share hugs as they try to cope with the loss of the young father.

The victim’s mother has mixed feelings.

“I’m mad. I’m sad. I just don’t know,” Rosie Wilkins said.

Earlier in the day, the father of five had received threats from several individuals, the family said, but so far police have not identified the individuals or what the threats concerned.

Wilkins’ pregnant girlfriend was also inside the home and was struck in the crossfire. She was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis and underwent surgery Monday morning.

Family members say they tried to talk to police about it.

The Coldwater police chief told us there are records of an officer going to the home, but Wilkins did not file charges.

Now Wilkins’ children are dealing with his death.

“When she heard about her daddy she just screamed and had a fit,” the victim’s mother said. “She’s 5-years-old. They were so close.”

Wilkins was well known in the Coldwater community.

“Everybody loved him. We all have problems, but he wasn’t a bad person. He had more love than he had hatred,” the victim’s brother said.

His family says they want the person responsible charged.

“He didn’t have to kill him. He should have just left it alone. It’s getting to be to much killing around her for no reason,” Amos Caldwell, the victim’s father, said.

WREG’s Shay Arthur was told as of 1 p.m. Monday, Wilkins’ girlfriend was still in critical condition.

Police are not releasing the name of the person they are questioning.
