(Memphis) Family, friends and fellow officers honored an officer killed in the line of duty Saturday, the one year anniversary of her tragic death.
Martoiya Lang’s little girl and mother put flowers at her grave-site Saturday. It has been a year since the officer was shot and killed while serving a search warrant on Mendenhall Cove. The fallen hero’s family has now gone through every holiday without Lang.
“Some days are easy, some days are tough,” said Lang’s cousin, Neicy Moore.
Lang’s 4 daughters have each celebrated a birthday without the woman who gave birth to them. They are 15, 14, 13, the youngest is just 3-years-old.
“She understands, but she doesn’t understand. She understands mama is not here physically but she will always be with you and she’ll always be living in your heart,” said Moore.
Moore says despite the sad and gloomy day, Saturday is about remembering Martoiya and celebrating her.
“She had a great life. She lived a great life. She lived, she loved, she learned, she taught a lot of things,” expressed Moore.
“I think I’ve cried and grieved long enough. I’m ready to smile and remember her, just remember,” said Officer Lang`s supervisor Lt. Frank Winston. Winston prays no other officer loses a fellow officer in the line of duty.
“It hurts. We are going to be a family for the rest of our lives; we are going to be a family for the rest of our lives,” exclaimed Winston.
For Winston, part of his job is to take care of his new family, Lang’s children.
Neicy is thankful to have that support. She says moments like these help keep Officer Martoiya Lang’s legacy alive.
“She is never going to be forgotten,” said Moore.
