MEMPHIS, Tenn. — “We need to come together and unify as one collective whole,” DeMale McVay said during an interview with WREG last week.
McVay is known around town for calling for the violence in Memphis to stop.
McVay, who is also known as Melmane, makes songs about money, sex, and living life on the streets.
He is accused of raping a woman while she was in and out of consciousness.
“I think that it’s awful when, you know, someone forces themselves on someone and rapes them,” Veronique Meal said.
“Don’t play the system and don’t play me. One thing about it, two things for sure — my brother and going like that, and I ain’t letting my brother go out like no sucker,” McVay’s sister said.
Family members were visibly upset — saying the story that was told to police is not true.
“My brother got too many females to sit there and want to rape something that he could just get.”
Police said McVay picked the woman up from a house on Eldridge in North Memphis and took her to a home off of Hawkins Mill Road in Raleigh.
Court documents revealed the pair started drinking when the victim passed out and woke up twice to McVay performing sex acts on her.
“My son is no angel, and he never has been,” Sharon Smith said.
Smith said while her son has been locked up for violent crimes, weapons charges, and drugs, he would never do what police said he did.
“I’m that type of mother. If my son have done something like that, yeah he needs to be punished for that,” Smith told WREG. “I’d never uphold for my children, but, this right here, I know he have not did that.”
