MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Family members of a man shot and killed by Memphis Police Wednesday night told WREG officers could have handle the situation differently.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the shooting in the 3400 block of Dillard Road in Raleigh.
A MPD spokesperson said officers were called to the home around 9 p.m. after a woman reported her son had a shotgun.
When officers arrived, police said the man pointed the gun at them and they fired back.
Family members at the home Thursday morning identified the man as 30-year-old Alexio Allen.
Allen’s sister said she called 911 because her brother was hearing voices.
Natasha Lagaite said she tried to keep police out of the home while they calmed her brother down, and said her brother’s fiancée had already hidden the weapon.
“She had the gun. He didn’t even know where the gun was, that’s what we are saying. It’s crazy,” said Lagaite.
Debra Nesbit said police asked if there was a weapon in the home and she was trying to give the gun to officers when Allen ran over to her and tried to take it away and was shot.
“I was begging him to give me the gun back. Just let me keep it, just let me hold it so this wouldn’t happen,” said Nesbit.
