GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — An assistant principal has resigned and a teacher has been suspended at a Germantown Municipal School. The two worked at Farmington Elementary, but the district is saying little about the case.

It’s not yet known if the two cases are connected. A reason for Assistant Principal Christopher Shumaker’s resignation was not released, and the teacher who was suspended without pay was not identified.

“It’s just really a shock,” Mary Shelley Ritchey, who was waiting for her sons outside of school Tuesday, said.

Ritchey said she’s disappointed by the news.

“Our assistant principal was excellent, very kind, very thoughtful, put on a fabulous veterans program that my dad was included in, and I’m sorry to see him leave,” Ritchey said.

The situation left some wanting to know why they weren’t notified.

“If they’re going to do something like that they should tell the parents and grandparents what’s going on,” Becky Cole, who was picking up her grandchild, said.

Ritchey said she’s just thinking about the kids.

“I think all the people here are crazy about all the people employed here, so it will be a day sad day for the kids. I’m sure whatever happened, happened for a reason,” Ritchey said.

Cole said she’ll be working to find out what happened.

“I’ll probably be calling the principal and be asking what’s going on,” Cole said.

WREG left several messages for the principal and superintendent but never heard back.
