MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A child is in critical condition and her father is facing charges.
Christopher Presley, 30, took his 2-year-old daughter to Methodist South Friday and told police she hanged herself with a belt, according to the affidavit.
Police were originally led to believe the child had fallen down a flight of stairs with the belt around her neck.
Doctors told police the girl’s injuries, which included blunt-force trauma to her arm and abdomen, did not match Presley’s claims.
The child was transferred to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition, and police said she could not breathe on her own. The injuries caused possible internal hemorrhaging, according to the affidavit.
Presley later told police he and his daughter were the only ones in the house when he was caring for her, and he inflicted the injuries on her.
He was charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated child neglect and aggravated child endangerment.
