Father forced to get stitches after son attacks him with a hatchet

Raleigh, Tenn. — A man is in jail, charged with attacking his own father with a hatchet.

“I was laying like that when he hit me,” John Karney described.

Karney said he never thought his son, John Null, would hurt him.

However on Monday, he showed up at his home in Raleigh angry, violent and holding a hatchet.

Police said he was looking for his girlfriend, who had just broken up with him but she wasn’t there.

Karney tried to tell his son to put the hatchet down.

Instead he started swinging.

“He just started coming down on me and hacking me in the leg. He missed three times; hit me once,” he recalled.

Karney said Null took off, but turned himself in later.

The cut to Karney’s leg needed nine stitches, but he says its nothing to the emotional pain he feels.

He could have fought back, but out of love for his son he said he just couldn’t.

“You cannot put your hands on your own kid. You can’t do it,” he said.

Null is charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He is being held on a $30,000 bond and is due in court Thursday.
