MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead after being beaten in the middle of the street.
Witnesses said the victim was knocked out with a crow bar.
He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
To make matters worse, children watched firsthand as the violence unfolded.
The victim rented out rooms at the house.
Neighbors said he came outside, and to his surprise, his meter was missing.
Crime tape and police cars flooded Scottsdale Avenue.
“It shook me up. Shook me up.”
Neighbors are still in shock after seeing a man they call “Big Steve” knocked out.
“He had blood on his shirt and things of that nature,” a neighbor said.
People who live there said it all started after a tenant stole a meter from the home.
“He wanted the meter back, and they obviously didn’t want to give it back,” the neighbor said.
“They beat him to death with a crowbar. That’s crazy man,” another neighbor said.
“Man, that man was a good man. It’s so hard to just put it out there how good of a man he was because he ain’t mess with nobody.”
“It’s heartless. It’s heartless.”
Officers told WREG one person, who knew the victim, was responsible for the beating.
However, witnesses said the man was jumped.
The attack has the community on edge, especially on Father’s Day weekend.
“Nobody really safe. Y’all ain’t safe.”
At last check, the person who did this is still out there on the streets.
