MEMPHIS, Tenn. — WREG has confirmed one of the suspects involved a shootout with police Wednesday afternoon is dead. Witnesses say the man shot at police first. The news comes just minutes after we learned the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has officially taken over the case. They are flying agents and forensic specialists in as we speak. They are expected to land in Memphis around 6 p.m. Representatives from the Mayor’s Office, Memphis Police and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office swarmed the area trying to piece together what happened. WREG was told by witnesses on the scene a gold Chevrolet Impala was being chased by deputies when it hit a Camaro. It then hit a Nissan and fishtailed. Witnesses said when the car came to a stop at South Parkway and Mississippi, the suspects jumped out of the vehicle, pulled a gun and opened fire on authorities. The deputies fired back. One suspect was hit as the other fled down the street. Mayor Jim Strickland said he is not able to discuss the details of the case, but he said in a statement: “This is a reminder of the dangers our officers face on a daily basis, even on something as routine as a traffic stop.” The exchange of gunfire forced a school down the street to temporarily go into lockdown. Parents are now being allowed to pick up their children from that location. It’s unknown at this time why the suspects were being chased in the first place. This is a developing story.
