(Memphis) The Children’s Memorial Flag is now flying in front of the Memphis Child Advocacy Center to honor the short life of baby Aniston Walker.
The 7-week-old was reported missing in early January.
Her body was found last weekend in Millington and her mother, Andrea Walker, was charged with first-degree murder.
At the ceremony at the Child Advocacy Center, Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said she was with her own children when she got the news.
“My youngest said, ‘What are you going to do about it, momma?’ and I said, ‘I am going to do what I do – seek justice,’ but this not going to bring back Aniston or the others,” said Weirich.
Aniston’s death is one of several involving children in the Mid-South in recent weeks.
Thursday, Patricia Gale Redman was charged with killing her stepson in Olive Branch.
Police also arrested Tommy and Amanda Raines of Horn Lake for the murder of an 11-year-old who weighed just 56 pounds.
Neighbors say they didn’t know the boy was in trouble.
Those whose job it is to protect children say it’s up to everyone to get involved.
“You know, we as adults can be the eyes and ears of children in our neighborhood paying attention and speaking out if you see something amiss–that seems wrong,” said Virginia Stallworth, executive director of the Child Advocacy Center.
Since 2005, the flag in front of the Memphis Child Advocacy Center has been raised for 56 children who have died as a result of abuse or neglect.
