MEMPHIS, Tenn. — At a parking area for the Wolf River Greenway near Humphreys Boulevard, it’s not yield signs, but flooding that stopped traffic.
Signposts and some roads are almost covered in water. The water threatens neighboring offices such as those of Dr. Tom Greenwell.
“There are places here at least ten feet underwater. I am fairly sure it’s going to come across Humphreys Boulevard here, and in my office building over here is on the first floor. I am a little concerned about that,” Greenwell said.
One road that usually leads to a parking lot and a trail is now more aquatic than dirt.
“This is higher than it was last spring and if it rains today like they claim that it’s going to, it will probably come across the road,” Greenwell said.
Thursday, WREG showed you how flooding created an odor problem in nearby Germantown.
Floodwaters from an old landfill at Germantown and Wolf River pushed up gas and a bad smell to the surface.
Patrick Lawton is Germantown City Manager. He said city leaders are monitoring the flooding.
“We thought we were in pretty good shape, and we took precautions to close the Greenway and continue to monitor neighbors and those type of things,” Lawton said.
As for now, many are watching and waiting for the water to recede.
“It’s going to get a lot higher, and hopefully it won’t cause any damage to the trail itself once the water goes down,” Greenwell said.
Update: On Friday evening, the National Weather Service issued a Flood Warning for the Wolf River.
It will be active until further notice.
Experts say the it is forecast to rise another 1.5 feet by Saturday.
