MEMPHIS, Tenn. — You spent weeks planning that perfect Thanksgiving meal, now you’re facing a new challenge: what to do with the leftovers.

Health experts are asking you to be careful, because if you store them wrong or too long, you could wind up sick.

The USDA said your Thanksgiving meal can turn into a breeding ground for bacteria and leave you and your family with some unpleasant symptoms.

“Everybody has had food poisoning at one time and another,” said Freeman Sheffield, who loves leftovers.

To avoid it, health experts say put your food away with in two hours and keep you’re turkey and sides in separate, sealed containers.

You’ve got four days to eat it, but then you need to chuck it or freeze it.

If you freeze it, turkey can last up to four months and casseroles up to six months.

WREG found a free app called FoodKeeper that will help you, not just now, but throughout the year.

You can search a type of food, and it will tell you how to store it and how long you have before it goes bad.
