MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Sitting in a line of food trucks in East Memphis was a man with a mission.
“I think we got the best fish here,” Carl Askew said.
Customers read scriptures, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear…”
Askew owns Fish From Heaven.
“Our motto is we feed people physically and spiritually,” Askew explained. “We try to give you a word every day.”
He opened the rolling fish fry years ago but recently took on the job full-time.
Askew grew up in South Memphis and went to South Side High School.
Although his family was not struggling, he lived in the middle of poverty.
“Drugs, gangs and crime.”
It was an environment he refused to fall victim to.
Askew now uses his business to give others some inspiration no matter what they are going through.
“They found out that I have cataracts, and I’m going to have to have surgery,” Carolyn Coffey, a customer, said.
“The world is full of madness and tragedy,” Kathy Stafford said.
Many of those facing issues left feeling a little better.
“Hey. God is good,” Coffey shouted.
Askew said he has developed relationships he hopes will make a difference.
“I try not to be too religious. People can’t relate to it. I try to be just like other people,” the owner told WREG.
Depending on the day of the week, you can find the truck downtown or East Memphis.
