MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Fox Meadows convenience store was shut down Wednesday afternoon after it was declared a nuisance.
District Attorney Amy Weirich confirms Stop and Shop Discount Store on South Mendenhall, near Knight Arnold, was shut down because drug deals were happening outside.
Police have also been called to the store in the past for assaults, thefts, burglaries, vandalism and shoplifting.
Weirich said the owner of the store, Hani Deumah, isn’t in trouble with the law, however.
She says people have been gathering in the parking lot to do drug deals, and many arrests have been made.
Two of those arrests happened today, and there have been 489 calls to the business in the past 40 months, law enforcement said.
Letters were sent to the owners of Stop & Shop in order to resolve the issue, but the business has now been shut down as a last resort.
This is an ongoing investigation.
The owner will be have a chance to appeal the closure at a hearing scheduled for March 13 in Environmental Court.
We will update this as more information becomes available.
