Frayser community debates how to rid area of gangs

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are implementing an injunction on the FAM Mob street gang in Frayser. The order will give police power to arrest people hanging out with known gang members in a particular area.

Jesse Binion sees the gangs in his neighborhood, going into abandoned houses, firing guns, and destroying the area he calls home. He just asks for one simple thing.

“Not to be afraid to go outside to be in your neighborhood,” he said.

The Memphis Police Gang Unit and the District Attorney’s Office want to focus on two apartment complexes, Greenbrier and Ridgecrest. Officers say they’ve studied the gang and know a lot of their crime is centered There.

Police say it’s worked in other parts of the nation, and even here in Memphis, but not everyone in Frayser likes the idea.

“Tell a guy he’s breaking a law because he belongs to an organization, I don’t think it’s constitutional,” Joe Hunter, a community leader in Frayser, said.

Community members say they’re willing to help police find other ways. Still, some feel the injunctions are long overdue.
