MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The road to a state championship is paved with a lot of plays.
Now that the Trezevant High Football Team has made it there, it’s also going to take a lot of money to make the road trip.
That’s where a group of Frayser pastors came into play.
Wednesday they showed up at the school with a check in hand to help the Trezevant Bears get to Cookeville for the big game.
“We have raised $1,400 to make sure they have an incredible meal on Friday, an incredible meal on Saturday. We are still raising money so we can help families get to Cookeville as well,” said Pastor Anthony Anderson of Faith United Methodist Church.
It’s a gesture the team, the school and the players appreciate.
“It costs a lot to go up and stay the night, and feed the kids. So every little bit helps,” said Trezevant Football Coach Teli White.
“It’s important to have our community support us because without our community we wouldn’t be the school we are. We depend on them to support us in all our endeavors,” said Trezevant Principal Mario Willis.
The players who will hit the field in search of state championship agreed.
“We put in a lot of work through the whole summer,” said Trezevant football player Justin Swift.
They hoped that work pays off.
The Trezevant Bears went to the state championship last year, but fell short of winning.
They are hoping for a victory this time.
They play Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Cookeville.
