MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hundreds of people spent Thursday night remembering their loved one who was murdered in a home invasion, and vowing to keep his legacy alive.
Friends and family said Jarmelle “JoJo” Jones loved Memphis and wanted to make it a better place.
“From friends to classmates to just people around the city, he touched everybody,” said Nick Scull, Jones’s fraternity brother.
According to police, masked men broke into a Cordova home last Friday killing Jones and injuring his girlfriend.
Jones was murdered at just 26 years old.
“He was loving, kind, gentle and warm” said close friend and fraternity brother Greg Vann.
Vann said he’s having a hard time coping with what happened, “He just talked a lot about bringing the whole city of Memphis together. Everything he did was about, ‘I’m going to bring the whole city out.”
Jones went to the University of Memphis, loved music, his job at Ching’s Hot Wings, and most of all, inspiring kids to make Memphis become a better city.
As part if a vigil at The New Olivet Baptist Church, they asked people to volunteer and become a mentor.
“Get people to take back Memphis. Mentor someone else. Prevent this from happening in the future,” said friend Renee Wills.
Friends and family said it is a call to action to keep his work alive.
“I am proud of you for bringing the whole city out once again. That’s what he was good at. Bringing the city out,” said Vann as he held back tears.
At the end of the event, there were youth organizations set up, so people could sign up.
Jones’s killers have not been caught.
