(Byhalia, MS) Every morning, Kevin McClung Senior drove his 17 year-old-son Kevin “KJ” McClung Junior to Byhalia High School.
Sadly that was not the case Tuesday morning, after KJ was killed in an accident Monday night.
“I saw the car off in the ditch. It hit the tree. They had the white sheet over it, so I knew,” said McClung.
KJ was in his mother’s car Monday with three other teens when he lost control and crashed into a tree.
KJ was driving with a learner’s permit he had only for one month.
Mississippi state law states KJ should have had an older driver with him, “…you are not allowed to drive alone and must have a supervising driver 21 years of age or older seated next to you at all times. The supervising driver must be prepared to take control of the vehicle at any time.”
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department’s initial report on the accident said KJ’s car and a SUV collided near the crest of a hill on St. Paul road in Byhalia.
Teens in the car with KJ have a different version of events.
“The truck was on our side. He tried to swerve and lost control. He flipped about four times and hit the tree,” said 18-year-old Ricardo Waston who was in the passenger’s seat of KJ’s car.
Watson, his sister and another female were taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital last night.
They have serious injuries, but are expected to be okay.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the accident.
So far no one has been ticketed.
