SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The dangerous driving conditions we saw all day weren’t looking any better Monday night.
Cars were abandoned on state highways and left in ditches on Interstate 240, and an ice and slush mix coated roads and highways throughout Shelby County.
We saw lots of cars slipping and sliding on Poplar Avenue as if Memphis’ busiest road was an ice rink.
Even Beale Street was frozen over.
You were forced to find a new way home when overpasses like the one on 240 next to Lamar were shut down for hours. A semi-truck was stuck in the middle of it because of thick ice.
It got so bad, part of 385 was blocked off for most of Monday.
WREG saw emergency crews on it Monday evening still clearing it up.
“I am hoping the ice trucks are going to run again,” John Luck said.
TDOT says crews are resting tonight, but will be back in full force before you wake up.
As for Shelby County crews, they’re watching the roads too in case they need to put more salt down.
In the meantime, emergency crews are asking you to stay off the roads if you can.
If you need to go somewhere, give yourself plenty of time and drive slowly.
