EADS, Tenn. — Bright colors were everywhere for a girl many said had a spirit that was equally as bright.

That’s what the family of 17-year-old Rachel Lynch asked people to wear to a funeral service held for her at Briarcrest Christian High School Friday.

Lynch and Maddie Kruse,17, were killed after a drunk driver hit them.

The family was adamant they wanted the funeral service to be a celebration of Rachel’s life.

People, including some of the three who were injured in the crash, arrived wearing bright colored clothing.

Melandus Penson was charged with two DUI deaths in connection to the crash.

WREG discovered he had a long history of DUI arrests.

Mayor A C Wharton expressed his sympathy to Rachel and Maddie’s families Friday and shared words of faith.

“The old Gospel song says, ‘Cheer up my brother. Live in the sunshine. We’ll understand it better by and by.’ So, let us cheer up, as they’re doing for a celebration of life, and things will get brighter,” Wharton said.

Penson is being held on a $3 million bond for the DUI charges.
