(Tupelo, MS) Funeral arrangements have been made for fallen Tupelo police officer Gale Stauffer.
Officer Joseph Maher, 26, is in critical condition after the responded to a robbery at BancorpSouth’s Gloster Creek Village and were shot Monday.
The two officers responded and confronted the suspects on south Gloster Street.
At least one of the suspects then began shooting at close range.
Police said they do not yet know if the officers returned fire, only that multiple casings were found in the area.
Officer Gale Stauffer was pronounced dead at 3:46 p.m.
The 38-year-old leaves behind a wife and two children.
He had been with the police department for eight years, served with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office for one year, and was also a combat veteran of the Louisiana Army National Guard.
The funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Tupelo.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

BancorpSouth announced Tuesday evening that a special memorial account for Sergeant Gale Stauffer’s family and an account for Officer Joseph Maher had been established.
Contributions may be made at any local BancorpSouth branch.
BancorpSouth will match contributions up to $10,000 for each account.
