Garbage truck slams into care home trapping residents on second floor

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Four people were reportedly injured after a Waste Pro vehicle malfunctioned sending it into a home care facility.

Initial reports indicate the garbage truck was nearing the intersection of Graceland and Finley Road when it slammed into LNJ Care Home. The impact sent the vehicle all the way through the other side of the home, knocking down the only stairwell leading up to the second floor.

“I was sleeping when it happened. It woke me up. I thought it was just a big truck going down the street,” neighbor Morris Thomas said.

He says he heard a loud bang and saw the Waste Pro truck sticking out of the house when he went outside.

Fire crews had to help those residents out of the building.

Eight people were reportedly inside at the time.

Early Wednesday morning, police said the driver and an employee received minor injuries during the crash. The owner of the residential home later told us two other residents were also hurt.

A representative with Waste Pro made the scene, but wouldn’t comment on what caused the incident saying it was still under investigation.

However, the owner stated she was told the brakes failed.

All residents are accounted for and being seen by the fire department as a precaution.

The Red Cross is assisting at this time.
