Man robs Germantown couple, forces them to help him escape

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Police are still searching for a man they say broke into a Germantown couple’s home and robbed them at gunpoint. This is the third armed robbery in Germantown in the past week.

Right now police aren’t drawing any connections between the cases because they say the suspect descriptions are different but they did say this string of robberies is unusual.

“Here in Germantown you don’t break into homes,” said Mary Houston.

Houston lives across the street from the Nottoway subdivision, a gated neighborhood off Poplar Ave.

According to police around 11:30 p.m. Friday night a man, armed with a gun, broke into a couple in their early 70s home who live in the subdivision on Hazelton Drive.

He took jewelry and cash then forced them to drive him to the area of Kirby and Winchester Roads where he then took off.

“I’m totally shocked,” said Houston.

Houston recently moved to Germantown to escape crime, after her home in Memphis was burglarized several times.

Since the rash of robberies Germantown Police said they’re now increasing patrols throughout the community.

“This certainly is a top priority and we are not sparring any resources,” said Deputy Chief Rodney Bright.

But that isn’t making everyone feel safer.

“Germantown Police can’t be everywhere. I have a concealed carry permit, I usually don’t carry but looks like I might have to start carrying,” said Mike Moore, a Germantown resident.

However Houston said she has faith the police will catch those committing these crimes and the culprits will be held accountable.

“They may not have been caught this past week but they will be caught,” she said.

According to police, “the victims described the suspect as a black male, in his 20s or 30s, approximately 6’4” tall, 230 to 240 pounds, with a muscular build, dressed in all black clothing with some type of head and facial covering.”

The victims in this case were not injured. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Germantown Police Department at (901) 757-2274
