CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A man who tried to help someone stuck in the wintry conditions was killed for his helpful actions.

Marvin Jacob Lee, 27, is charged with fatally shooting Jefferson Heavner, who stopped to try to help him when he got stuck on an icy road, WBTV reported.

Neighbors told investigators they heard what sounded like a car stuck on an icy road and tires spinning and went down to the road.

The Catawba County sheriff said Heavner was driving a pickup truck and also stopped to try and help the stuck driver.

The helpers started talking about how the stuck driver was acting strangely and maybe they should just call law enforcement to get the man out. That’s when a pistol was drawn by the stuck driver, who jumped out of the car.

The sheriff said he shot and struck Heavner.

The good Samaritan went down, and the sheriff said Lee shot several more shots, killing the victim.

Law enforcement responded with an armored vehicle and shields because the shooter would not respond to commands. When Lee was taken into custody the sheriff said he still had the pistol on him.

Lee was charged with murder.
