JACKSON, Miss. — United States and Mississippi flags throughout the state of Mississippi will be lowered to half-staff until sunset Saturday in honor of the four Marines and Navy petty officer who died in the Chattanooga attack.

Gov. Phil Bryant previously issued an order lowering flags until sunset Wednesday. His new order extends that three more days.

This action follows flags on the U.S. Capitol and the White House being lowered Tuesday morning. Governors across the country have been doing the same.

“The men and women who defend this country are under attack. Just last week, five American heroes were killed in a deliberate act of violence,” Gov. Bryant said. “This is a small way Mississippi can honor those who died.”

Gov. Bryant is accompanying this symbolic gesture with action; he recently ordered the Mississippi National Guard to arm military personnel at military facilities.
