MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said Tuesday that all public school buildings in the state will remain closed for the rest of the current semester.
“That does not mean school is canceled,” Gov. Reeves said. “Distance learning is continued and I will be asking every school to submit plans that they are doing just that.”
He also asked all school systems to prepare a plan for summer and fall schooling.
“Not everyone has fancy web cameras or fast internet. Not everyone has parents that can become full-time teachers,” he said.
Reeves said he plans on using federal money designated to the state to build on education attainment levels. He noted more needs to be done when investing in infrastructure to build better connectivity between communities.
As far as reopening the state, he said he would be creating a committee to look at different industries and different parts of the state.
“Under the restart Mississippi umbrella, they are going to develop a series of recommendations and goals in our new economy,” Gov. Reeves said.
On Tuesday, Mississippi’s coronavirus cases were at 3,087.
