JACKSON, Miss. — A lawsuit filed in federal court on Monday is seeking to do away with the Mississippi state flag.
Attorney Carlos Moore specifically filed the lawsuit against Governor Phil Bryant, saying it was necessary for the removal of the flag from all public lands.
According to sources, the lawsuit said the state flag violates the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the 14th Amendment.
It even went on to say it could “incite violence similar to the shooting in South Carolina, reported The Jackson Clarion-Ledger.
A spokesperson for the governor said the lawsuit was a “frivolous attempt to use the federal court system to usurp the will of the people.”
In 2001, Mississippians voted to keep the current state flag through a statewide referendum.
