Grandmother jailed on disturbing abuse charges

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis grandmother was locked up after she was charged with brutally beating her granddaughter who ran more than a mile to get help from other relatives.

However it didn’t end there.

Police said when they were taking a report from the victim, 62-year-old Willie Sharp showed up at the relative’s house and tried to attack her granddaughter again.

“I said ‘what are you doing walking around in this heat?’ She says ‘I’m running from my grandma’,” said Jereldean Carter.

Carter was surprised when she discovered her 14-year-old great niece at her home Monday afternoon.

According to police, Sharp confronted her granddaughter about a cellphone she found in her purse accusing her of stealing it.

The teen said Sharp pulled her out of bed by her hair, ripping some of it out and said, “I’m going to kill you” before going back in her room.

That’s when the girl took off and ran almost a mile and a half to Carter’s house.

Carter called police.

Shortly after officers arrived Sharp showed up at Carter’s house.

According to police she tried to attack her granddaughter and said, “I’m going to smack the sh** out of you!”

“The police pulled her back and she was trying to fight the police,” explained Carter.

The cops took Sharp to jail.

The girl told police she was often beat with extension cords and had the scars to prove it.

“All on her arm. She had welts on her back, all on her legs. She had plugs pulled out of her hair,” said Carter.

WREG went to Sharp’s house on Tuesday.

Her husband told WREG the whole case was a bunch of lies because his granddaughter didn’t want to get disciplined.

Neighbors in the area said they have never heard of problems from the home before.

Carter said she’s just thankful her great niece is safe and encourages others who are suffering from abuse to get help.

DCS is now investigating the case.

They refused to say if they have had any complaints against Sharp before.

The teen is now with her biological mother, who Carter said has been trying to get custody of her for a while.
