MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dozens of people gathered to remember an East Memphis store clerk.
They gathered outside the Citgo gas station on Cherry Road Friday night where 20-year-old Abdul Sidar was working when police said three men opened fire while robbing the place on February 18.
Sidar was shot and killed.
“It doesn’t affect one person. It affects the entire community,” said Sidar’s friend Mark Allen.
He was at the store when the incident happened. He watched his friend get shot.
“He was a good man. He was going to school to be a police officer. He couldn’t fulfill his dream,” he said.
During the gathering, the group said a prayer while they lit a candle for Sidar.
“I talked to him two hours before the shooting. I got gas, and he told me, ‘Have a great day.’ I said, ‘See you this afternoon,'” said Joshua Smith.
The group also remembered the other 40 homicide victims this year in Memphis.
“I just ask myself so many questions and can never seem to find an answer,” said a 13-year-old at the vigil.
“The violence has got to stop,” said Allen.
Sidar, his father and sister moved to Memphis from Jordan looking for a better life.
They hadn’t even been here a year.
Sidar’s father was at the store when his son was shot.
He actually ran after the suspects and shot one of them.
That suspect, Koalis Peete, is behind bars.
The two others have not been caught.
