Gun stolen out of elderly woman’s home, other valuables left untouched

COMO, Miss. — An elderly woman’s home was torn apart and a gun was stolen in Como.

Police said someone broke into her house but ignored every valuable item except the firearm.

WREG spoke to the woman, who said she is traumatized and scared to be in her own home now.

Miss Dolores Miller is 67 years young and said in all those years, something like this has never happened to her.

“I saw glass all in front of my door there, and I knew then what it was,” she said.

WREG was at the Como Police Department covering another story when the call came in. Chief Earl Burdette rushed to respond.

“I’m thinking the guy may still be in there,” he told WREG. “So I’m having an adrenaline rush, and so is she.”

No one was inside.

Miller had been out of town for a couple of days, so Burdette is not sure when the thief or thieves broke in.

The only thing they took: a gun.

“They took their time, and basically, they knew what they were looking for,” Burdette said.

What really makes this crime strange is Miller said lots of other valuable items were untouched, like a tablet and her brand new TV. There was even a signed refund check on the counter.

“Even my one-carat ring! They’d been my jewelry, but it was in there,” Miller said.”

Miller said she is thankful she was not home during the break-in and thankful to still have most of her things, but Burdette said having another gun on the streets worries him.

“We’re going to do everything in our power to try and get this subject off the street or subjects off the street.”

Burdette is taking this matter on personally and wants anyone with information to call his cell number at (662) 519-1290.
