Handcuffed felon escapes Memphis police custody

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A convicted felon, arrested for another crime and handcuffed, managed to escape from police custody last Thursday.

It is not clear why police did not release information about the escape until Monday.

Randy Rodgers was taken into custody Nov. 5 for an attempted burglary in the High Point Terrace neighborhood.

Police said Rodgers was armed at the time.

Rodgers was taken to the Tillman Station precinct where police discovered he is a convicted felon. He pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary in 2011.

Investigators said despite being handcuffed, Rogers “managed to overpower two investigators by assaulting them and fleeing from the police station.” Police said he ran west on Yale Road from Tillman. Officers tried to chase him but did not catch him.

There are active warrants for Rodgers for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, escape from incarceration, criminal attempt aggravated burglary and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

“I hope, if he comes this way, he stay on that side of the hedge,” neighbor Freddie Greer said. She lives near the police station and said she is armed in order to defend herself.
