MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A family medical clinic could soon shut its doors for good.
UT Medical Group sent home a letter to patients last week, saying, “We will be closing our Harbor of Health family practice office and Dr. Susan Nelson has decided to follow a long-planned career move to focus on medical care and service at the Church Health Center.”
UT is slated to end operations at the clinic on April 1st. It remains unclear what will happen after that.
Harbor of Health is located in the heart of Harbor Town and bills itself as a place for same day appointments.
WREG spoke with a patient who travels there from Southaven. She said she was sorry to hear the news.
“I am. I love the doctor. She’s great, but she’s moving on to other things, and that’s what she’s going to do,” said patient Janis Fabok.
UT Medical Group Spokesperson Ralph Berry told WREG the organization runs three family practice offices. He said they functioned as the “clinical arm” for doctors who teach at UT Health Science Center.
“This particular office just doesn’t fit with the long-range plans of the residencies and all those sorts of things. So, it’s more a future focus sort of thing,” Berry said.
Still, he explained this does not necessarily mean the clinic will close for good.
“We are still in negotiations with a couple medical practices that may take over Harbor of Health, so it’s still yet to be determined whether it will close,” Berry said.
UT Medical Group sent the letter because there is a legal requirement to notify patients about medical records information.
