Health Care Confusion: Where Do You Sign Up And What Changes to Expect

(Memphis) There is a lot of confusion a week before people start shopping for insurance plans under President Obama’s new Health Care Law.

“I don’t think anyone knows. I think there’s going to be horrible, massive confusion!” said Dr. Susan Besser.

Between the ads you see on television and a law longer than a Harry Potter book, Besser is one of the million Americans confused over the changes the new Health Care law will bring.

“I don’t understand it, and I’m theoretically well-educated. I can image a person who knows nothing about healthcare, is going to understand less than I do,” said Besser.

We do know Tennessee will have some of the cheapest rates in the country.

The Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday that in Tennessee, the basic plan will cost $181 a month and will cover 60 percent of benefit costs.

The next highest plan will cover 70 percent and cost around $235 a month.

We’re still waiting to learn how much the two most expensive plans will cost.

Insurance companies will give tax credits based on income, location, family size and even tobacco use.

Besser said one thing to keep in mind: there will be a limited number of doctors, specialists and hospitals you can use compared to someone who has insurance through their employer.

“The options are cheaper because it’s not intended be an all for everyone. It’s not a buffet of insurance. Its going to be an entree,” said Besser.

On October 1st, you’ll be able to create an account online at https://www.healthcare.gov/.

You can create an account online by typing in some information and then start shopping.

If you don’t have a computer, you can call an insurance broker who will help you through the process.
