MEMPHIS, Tenn. — West Memphis Police said a 43-year-old woman was found dead in her car in the parking lot of Southland Park in West Memphis. The police department and the coroner’s office would not release the cause of death. However, health officials said with the heat Wednesday it’s a good reminder to be safe outside.

“It is hot, this is summer in Memphis.”

Dr. Helen Morrow with the Shelby County Health Department said it seems to be hotter earlier this year.

So far there have been no heat related deaths in Shelby County, but WREG looked at the numbers.

According to the Health Department from 2009 to 2014 there have been 42 recorded heat related deaths.

“Some people we know that they may have gotten overheated, they suffered heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Other people are found where heat could’ve been a contributing factor,” she said.

On Wednesday, we found Sarah Lewis and her class of elementary summer school students playing in the water downtown.

“We have been drinking water all day,” she told us.

Lewis said the water is needed to help the kids in the long run.

“When they get dehydrated they get sick for several days and they can’t come back,” she told WREG.

Dr. Morrow said you should also try to stay indoors and watch what you drink.

“Avoid caffeinated beverages or even alcohol because it can actually dehydrate you,” said Dr. Morrow.

She also said be sure to check on the elderly, who often don’t use the AC.

They need extra attention.

“Many of them are concerned about their income and being able to pay their bills,” she said.
