Highway for Heroes program brings mobile DMV to Memphis veterans

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A nationwide program is here in Memphis to help our local veterans get the DMV services they need.

A mobile DMV rolled into town as part of the Highway for Heroes initiative.

The Highway for Heroes program brings a mobile DMV to cities across the country so veterans can get quick service with everything from renewing their licenses to getting ID cards.

The bus even lets veterans get commercial licenses, a huge benefit for those still looking for civilian jobs.

“They can do their CDL knowledge testing on the bus. If they’ve been driving a vehicle in the military, whatever type of vehicle they were driving in the military they can transition that license over,” commercial driver’s license examiner Gary Austin said.

“I wish they’d started that a long time ago,” veteran Randall Snyder said. “I’ve been out of the service since 1976, so I wish they’d started that a long time ago.”

Vets said it makes life just a little bit easier. But more even more important than the service itself is the gesture, which speaks volumes.

“I appreciate having this,” Witt said. “I appreciate the veterans administration. It’s good they take care of us.”

The mobile DMV will be parked outside the Memphis VA hospital Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday it will be at 1056 East Raines Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
