MEMPHIS, Tenn. — New life may soon come for a vital piece of the Civil Rights movement in Memphis.
A multi-million dollar project aims to restore Clayborn Temple where Civil Rights leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. organized protests in support of Memphis sanitation workers in the 1960’s.
The plan is to have the historic site at the corner of Pontotoc and Hernando vibrant again by 2018.
Neighborhood Preservation Inc., or NPI, wants to use the site for religious, educational and community uses.
Shelby County Historian Jimmy Ogle said the building has been boarded up for at least 10 years.
Memphis Heritage said NPI is still working to come up with a plan and raising funds to put a plan in place.
NPI said it thinks people will be interested in using the historic for a number of things.
