(Memphis) MLGW crews are still at work in parts of Frayser, where downed power poles are still a problem from this week’s storm.

“”We woke up the next morning, looked out the window and seen that pole laying on the folks shed,” Frayser resident Marvin Stringfellow said.

By Thursday night, workers hoped to have power restored to everyone.

MLGW says Frayser took longer because Frayser took a harder hit.

“There was a lot more damage in that area due to the ice which broke power poles,” said Jerry Collins, MLGW President.

If it’s not power, it’s the trees.

Monday WREG cameras caught Keith Clark using an ax to remove parts of a tree that crashed into his Frayser home, but the ax was not cutting it.

By Thursday morning, professionals from Jones Brothers Tree and Landscape were on the job, using heavy equipment to remove the massive tree that had split the roof in half.

“Since Monday, we have had about 25 to 30 emergency calls that have come in and we have completed about 15 of them,” said Michael Jurgens of Jones Brothers Tree and Landscape.

Jones Brothers has been doing this type work since 1938 and is BBB approved, something the Better Business Bureau advises you look for when you are getting someone to clean up damage.

They say shop around for contractors, get competitive bids, and make sure you get everything in writing, including an outline of the work to be done, materials to be used, and the breakdown of labor.

“There are a lot of guys out with just trucks and trailers trying to do the same sort of work. If they mess something up, it falls back on the homeowner. The cheapest route is not always the best route,” said Jurgens.

Another tip from the BBB is to never pay the full amount of repairs in advance.

They say 30 percent is a standard down payment.
