MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two homes were destroyed after a landslide along the Tennessee River in Hardin County on Sunday morning.
The homes collapsed about 60 feet down an embankment along Glendale Road just north of Savannah, Tennessee.
One home was vacant, while the other was evacuated.
“They were able on Saturday to get some of their personal belongings, just a few things, but they lost most everything in the house,” said Melvin Martin, Hardin County emergency management director.
Martin said those residents are now staying with friends.
He said this is not the first time there’s been a landslide along this area, known as the Chalk Bluff.
“About eight years ago, had a smaller landslide,” he said. “Just with the heavy rains, and the river flooding has something to do with it, too.”
While the Tennessee River crested at Savannah on Saturday and was showing an eight-inch drop Monday, officials fear there could be more damage along Glendale Road.
“The landslide is still active, and it is still sliding down the side of the hill,” Martin said. “It’s also affected the road here, and this road is going to be permanently closed until some type of fix can be found for it.”
Martin said a number of roads are still closed, and resident should use extreme caution.
