HORN LAKE, Miss. — A Horn Lake man is dead and a Memphis police officer was stabbed after a road rage incident Tuesday evening in Horn Lake.

The DeSoto County coroner identified the man killed in the shooting as Athens Christopher Trey Mahrt, 28.

A man who said he was the brother of Mahrt’s girlfriend said Mahrt was the father of one daughter, was originally from Illinois and lived with his girlfriend’s family in Horn Lake. He was set to start a new job Wednesday as a truck driver.

Tuesday, he was running some errands alone. His doesn’t think Mahrt would’ve been the aggressor.

Authorities have not identified the officer who was stabbed, but his condition was upgraded to non-critical.

Detectives said it started when two drivers, one of them an off-duty MPD officer, became angry with one another for some reason near Goodman Road and Hurt Road in Horn Lake.

Both men then drove down Goodman Road to a Walgreens parking lot at 4:50 p.m. Police don’t believe other passengers were in their cars.

“We’re trying to find out as many details as possible,” said Capt. Joseph Keene with the Horn Lake Police Department.

Horn Lake police say the off-duty officer exited his car and went to the Redbox in the parking lot. The second man then confronted him about the road rage incident and stabbed him in the neck.

“He pulled out a knife and stabbed the male around the neck area. Upon getting struck by the blade, the second male pulled out a handgun and shot the other male,” Keene said.

Police said the man who was shot was pronounced dead on the scene. He was shot at least one time.

The off-duty officer, who had been stabbed, went to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

Two cars were towed from the parking lot just before 8 p.m. Police said they’re interviewing witnesses and trying to get surveillance video of the incident.
