MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The entire Mid-South is keeping an eye on the Mississippi River as it continues to rise, causing a flood threat to the area.
Just days ago, rain pounded the area already devastated from another storm system that produced high winds, hail and even a couple of tornadoes.
All that water has to go somewhere and forecasters say what’s coming could rival the flood of 2011.
As of Tuesday morning, the river was at 27.26 feet, just several inches shy of the 28 feet needed to be considered Action Stage.
It’s followed by the orange Flood Stage at 34 feet, the red Moderate Flood Stage at 40 feet, and the purple Major Flood Stage at 46 feet.
The floods in May 2011 crested at 48.03 feet.
However, the highest crest ever recorded in Memphis was back in 1937 when it reached 48.70 feet.
