MEMPHIS, Tenn. –Hundreds of people packed the Benjamin Hooks Library Monday to see if they qualified for a job.
The jobs were mostly industrial staffing jobs and the line was out the door.
“I was just laid off my job two weeks ago so I’m out this morning,” said Delois Crayton, who has been operating machinery in factories for more than 25 years.
Monday morning the single mom was first in line at the Randstad re-entry job fair.
She heard about the event Monday morning on WREG’s Daybreak show and showed up two hours early just to be safe.
“I know a lot of people are out of a job so I didn’t want to get here at 9 o’clock or 9:45 a.m. You probably have 200 people standing in line,” she explained.
Some of the companies Randstad was recruiting for were Electrolux and FedEx’s Supply Chain.
“The jobs are picker packers, fork lift operators, document processors and customer service,” explained Phyliss Dye with Randstad.
Job seekers filled out pre-screening questionnaires and then met with consultants to figure out what their next step would be.
“We have around 150 to 200 jobs that are available,” said Dye.
WREG followed Crayton as she went through the process.
Consultants said with her experience they’re sure they could find a place for her.
Shepreta Miller has been applying to jobs all over town, so far no luck but she isn’t giving up.
“You have to get out and get it. It’s not given to you, you have to get it,” she said.
Crayton offered similar advice for those out there looking for a job.
“Just don’t give up on what you wanna do. Today might not be the job for you but it’s not gonna stop me. The bills still have to be paid,” she said.
Randstad was also helping former felons looking to better their lives and get a second chance.
If you missed the job fair there will be another one in about two weeks.
The location has not been determined.
WREG will let you know more information when we get it.
