Shooting that left one person injured, I-240 closed may not have been random, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Only three months into the year, Memphis Police confirm they have investigated nearly two dozen shootings along the area’s busiest roads. The latest was overnight on I-240 eastbound.

For nearly four hours, I-240 between Getwell and Perkins was closed after someone in a car was shot. Police said a driver flagged down an officer for help and they found the wounded person in a car riddled with bullets.

Authorities have not released any word on that person’s condition.

As a motorcycle rider, Damyan Lacey said he’s used to dodging cars, but the possibility of dodging bullets is why he stays off the freeways when he can.

“I don’t trust it,” he said. “Too many people get killed on the interstate.”

His apprehension is understandable when you hear that Memphis Police have confirmed that there have been 23 highway shootings so far this year. That breaks down to an interstate shooting nearly every three days.

WREG reached out to detectives to get more clarity on what prompted the shooting. The only thing they can share with us now is that this may not have been a random shooting.
